Physical Distance Is Not An Obstacle To Acquire Knowledge

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: “Obtain knowledge even it is in China. Because seeking knowledge is Fardh (compulsory) upon each Muslim.” “Verily angels spread their wings under the feet of the learners of knowledge in reverance to the knowledge they seek.” The word “China” is used to indicate distance. Therefore there is no excuse in seeking knowledge. Whether it is near or far, it is obligatory to acquire knowledge. When some conditions make it difficult or impossible to attain knowledge then it becomes necessary to travel far and wide in search of ilm (knowledge). There can be no valid reason to be ignorant. It is said that Jabir bin Abdullah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) went from Madinah Al-Munawwarah to Cairo, to acquire knowledge. When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) mentioned: “Angels spread their wings under those who seek knowledge”, he (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) meant that angels visit the gatherings of knowledge and surround those who are present there, peace will descend on them. And because of that peace, listening and learning become possible.” Some scholars claimed: “Angels display reverance and humility to the seekers of knowledge.”
